We did, and we left nothing out. Mariel and I explained the attack this morning. Alex broke down the Bellevue assault, starting with our conversation in the padded cell with Rene Ormeno. Doctor Holland detailed the morgue deluge. Father Freeman added the occasional line of commentary.
Carlton nodded sagely by the time we were done. When we finished with the hamster wheel reasoning we were trapped in, he again looked bemused. “I do hate to state the obvious, but I had just assumed from the outset that LaObliger and the WHC had set the forces of darkness against you, as retribution for destroying their pawn and the demons within him. After all, he worked for them. I never believed that no one, at all, could have completely and totally missed an evil that could allow a demon inside them.
“As for legal cause in the real world—especially if you need political cover—you can link one of their employees to symbols found in the attempt on your life. That’s the first connection. Second, if you take LaBitch at her word, Christopher Curran interacted with no one outside of work. Therefore, the only suspects you have are all tied into the Women’s Health Corps, as they are the only individuals who have any ties to Curran. Hence, currently, you have no one else to investigate.
“From our point of view, with the knowledge that we possess, you know, and I know that Curran was infested with a demon. More importantly, he was possessed by a demon that was deliberately guided by the people we’re looking for. Which means that Curran wasn’t picked out of a hat by this cult. Someone knew him. Indeed, I would conjecture that the cult picked Curran because they already knew he was a monster.”
Again, the rest of the room was silent. I had not interacted with ADA Carlton since the Rikers Island incident, so I had forgotten that he spoke in whole paragraphs.
Alex was the first to react. He grimaced. “Why didn’t we think of that?”
Carlton straightened. “You did. It was the exact logic that you had originally used to discuss the case with your CO. You were perfectly correct at the time. You only failed to realize that it was cause to keep digging into the WHC. You disregarded the original premise once you had used it to fulfill your original intent. In fact, had I been your commanding officer, I would have told you to focus all of your attention on the WHC. Tear their world apart. Root out their rot. And burn whatever was left.”
I arched my brow. I wasn’t used to hearing such things from anyone above my rank. They were usually too interested in being politic. “I gather you don’t like them much?”
“I dislike LaObliger,” Carlton answered. “Her style of politics is vile, and she herself is monstrous. You were in my office when she was there. That was not an aberration on her part. That is who she is.
“There is also one bit of data in my possession that you may not be aware of.
